Currently available best estimates suggest that approximately 190,040 tons of gold have been mined throughout history, of which about two-thirds has been mined since 1950. Since gold is indestructible, nearly all of this metal is still in use in one form or another. If every ounce of this gold were combined, the result would be a gold cube with each side measuring about 21 meters.
Below is a visual breakdown of the mined gold reserves and the latest estimate of unmined gold resources.
Total mined gold reserves: 190,040 tons
- Jewelry: 90,718 tons, 47.7%
- Private investments: 40,035 tons, 21.1%
- States: 32,575 tons, 17.1%
- Others: 26,711 tons, 14.1%
- Estimate of unmined resources: 54,000 tons
